PHUMULA LOUNGE

RESTAURANT

Phumula Lounge, the staff restaurant on the ground floor of Anglo American’s Global Shared Services office in Oxford Parks, is designed to connect with the vibrant urban culture of the precinct. Oxford Parks is known for its dynamic street life, shops, restaurants, hotels and piazzas. The interiors are outward orientated, conceived as an extension of the high-street experience. The name ‘Phumula’ – which means a place to rest, relax and ‘chill out’ – sets the tone for an atmosphere that is relaxed and informal, with a youthful urban edge. Services and lighting have been brought down with suspended steel trellises with hanging planters to create a more intimate scale within the restaurant’s double-volume space. Materials with urban associations such as the dark green subway tiles establish a somewhat dark, moody palette. Industrial elements are softened with layers of texture and pattern, such as the bespoke black-and-white patterned floor tiles. Woven elements on the furniture pieces add to the textured palette. A standout feature are the locally crafted custom ‘gold leaf’ light fittings. Seating includes booths, benches, large loungers and group tables for dining, conversation, collaboration or relaxation. An adjoining area with moveable furniture extends the restaurant with an adaptable informal gathering space.
