DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, LAND REFORM AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT

The architecture and interior design of the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development’s (DALRRD) headquarters draw on abstract representations of natural landscapes and urban grids, reflecting the varied landscapes and topographies at the core of the department’s endeavour. These intersecting motifs symbolise the inclusivity and belonging of South Africans in relation to the land, and, by extension, DALRRD. The interiors connect seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, drawing the outside in. The sculpted organic forms featured on the façade are reprised throughout the interiors in elements such as the walls, floors, ceiling bulkheads, timber screens, panelling and joinery. The custom-designed graphics on wallpaper, carpets and large-scale vinyl decals are composed from stylised graphic representations of agricultural landscapes with artistic techniques informed by traditional South African crafts such as beading and basketry. The colour palette and textures are also drawn from the land to reflect a contemporary African aesthetic rooted in tradition. The space planning was informed by the department’s values and culture, with large, light-filled floorplates that promote clear visual connections and communication. This fosters a progressive, connected and inclusive workplace culture. Special requirements, including security and archival facilities, were met though close collaboration between architects, project managers, contractors and the wider professional team. Meticulous planning and co-operation enabled adherence to rigorous departmental protocols.
