The merger of an international online education platform 2U and a local course provider GetSmarter required both brands and cultures to be integrated through workplace strategies that promote employee wellbeing, collaboration, focus and fun. This project provided an opportunity to work alongside the base building technical design team and developer to incorporate the tenant’s needs from the outset. The nature of the client’s business called for creative ideas and innovative approaches within a globally connected workplace. A double-volume central core, which includes the reception coffee shop, canteen and meal service area, forms the heart of the workspace, connecting business units and providing points of interest. An interactive amphitheatre positioned on the atrium edge enables staff engagement within the town-hall area. The space planning was arranged around four spatial zones reflecting 2U’s brand and culture: the arrivals experience, company culture, wellbeing facilities and global workspaces. Open plan neighbourhoods along the façade edge ensure access to natural light and views. A variety of work support spaces cater for physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs, including a wellness centre, headspace room, prayer rooms and the sweat box gym. A Thermally Activated Building System (TABS) providing passive cooling to the building required exposed slabs, so suspended acoustic panels were specified to ensure sound comfort.
