Winner of a national design competition, Paragon's proposed Graduate School for the University of South Africa consolidates postgraduate teaching, research, and collaboration into a single 7,400 m² facility on UNISA's Sunnyside campus in Pretoria. The brief called for a future-facing academic building — the design responds with a sculptural composition that merges programmatic clarity with architectural ambition.
The concept is structured around three defining elements. Two suspended pods — elevated, sculptural volumes in off-shutter concrete — house meeting rooms and quiet research spaces, lifted above the ground plane to open the campus beneath them and create a sense of arrival that is immediate and generous. Between and below, a glazed double-volume auditorium anchors the heart of the building as its most public space, drawing students, staff, and visitors into the centre of academic life. A sweeping cantilevered roof unifies the entire composition — part canopy, part environmental device — controlling solar gain across the north-facing elevations while providing shading, legibility, and a defining presence on the campus skyline.
Inside, the programme is designed to accommodate flexible academic use — moving from open collaborative spaces and generous circulation at lower levels to enclosed seminar rooms, individual study areas, neuroscience research labs, digital workspaces, and a postgraduate library above. The plan is shaped around the principle that the spaces between rooms matter as much as the rooms themselves, fostering the incidental encounters that drive academic exchange.
The cantilevered roof does more than define the silhouette. It reduces heat gain while encouraging natural ventilation and daylighting across the floorplates, with material choices guided by performance and longevity as much as visual identity.
Though unbuilt, the UNISA Graduate School stands as one of Paragon's strongest competition entries — a demonstration that institutional architecture can be both intellectually rigorous and deeply inviting, contributing meaningfully to the urban fabric of the campus it serves.
